Scandalous by D.A. Carson Part 2

Sometimes ago, I had finish reading Scandalous by D.A. Carson. It is a very interesting and educational book to read. I had learned a lot in this book.

There are 5 different chapters. The Ironies of the Cross: Matthew 27:27-51a, The Center of the Whole Bible: Romans 3:21-26, The Strange Triumph of a Slaughtered Lamb: Revelation 12, A Miracle Full of Surprises: John 11:1-53, and Doubting the Resurrection of Jesus: John 20:24-31. He used NIV in this book, but I am linking it to ESV.

Every chapter is very interesting, and he will explain the meaning of the passage and the point why this had to happened.

Revelation is a very hard book to read. I had learned a lot in this book about Revelation 12 and am thankful for that. Without the explaining it to me, I would be so lost trying to understand it.

In John 20:24-31, I had learned a lot especially in John 20:28 on how the Jehovah's Witnesses find it difficult to accept this verse at face value. We all know that they (Jehovah's Witnesses) do not believe that Jesus is truly God.

I did have problem with NIV in John 20:26. Why?

In John 20:26 NIV:
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"

In John 20:26 ESV:
26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”

In my mind, I kept telling myself, I thought it was Eight days later and not a week later. I did check in other translations such as KJV, NKJV, AMP, NASB, and many more on my Palm Pilot could hold all that translations. All of them used, "Eight days later". MMMM! To me, a week later is equal to seven days later and not eight days later. I kept telling myself that I might be counting its wrong. So, I wrote that down.

So, I had to ask myself, "Is a week later equal to 7 days later?", or "Is a week later equal to 8 days later?". I remembered the number 8 and was specific about that which caused me to look that up. My memory can be driving me up the wall to be very specific.

I email this question to a wonderful friend and learned from her. The Greek is "And after eight days." I would love to learn to read the Greek and Hebrews. I am thankful for someone who can read it for me.

No wonder why I never had been crazy about NIV and always prefer other translations.

See my other post about this
Scandalous by D.A. Carson that I first wrote.
