On June 14, I was reading 14th chapter of Proverbs in my NASB'77. I had read it last month, May. But one thing that caught my attention was the one word.
28 In a multitude of people is a king's glory,
But in the dearth of people is a prince's ruin. Proverbs 14:28 NASB'77 and NASB update
At first, I read it as: In a multitude of people is a king's glory,
But in the death of people is a prince's ruin. (My reading)
Then I saw an "r" in it and realize that wasn't "death". Then I thought that I might be reading KJV, and I had to check which Bible I had in my hand, and it was NASB. The reason why I thought it might be KJV because of "th" at the end of the word. I was thinking "dear" and add "th" to the word, and it didn't make sense to me. Then I had to look up in several different translations to see what it say.
28 In a multitude of people is the glory of a king,
but without people a prince is ruined. Proverbs 14:28 ESV
28 In a multitude of people is a king’s honor,
But in the lack of people is the downfall of a prince. Proverbs 14:28 NKJV
28 In the multitude of people is the king's honour:
but in the want of people is the destruction of the prince. Proverbs 14:28 KJV
28 A large population is a king's glory,
but without subjects a prince is ruined. Proverbs 14:28 NIV
Then I had to look up in the dictionary for the word, dearth. Here is what I learned:
dearth -- noun
1. an inadequate supply; scarcity; lack: There is a dearth of good engineers.
2. scarcity and dearness of food; famine.
—Synonyms 1. shortage, want, paucity, insufficiency.
—Antonyms 1. abundance, plenty, sufficiency; surplus.
Now, I have learned a new word!
Lord willing, in the month of July I will continue to read Proverbs but in different translation that is not NASB'77. One thing that I do know that I would love to learn to read Greek and Hebrews.
