I was reading from In praise of grace, then I read this verses below that was posted in their blog. Then I got lost reading what I had read and saw the word "meat" in that verse.
I had to look up to see what does that means or to find out if that was a typo which I like to find on blog, books, or anything that is written. Then I had to look into some translations that I like to use, then at the last request is to look into KJV.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Luke 7:37-38 KJVOther translations used: reclining (ESV, NASB), and sat (NKJV). I did look into NIV and NLT, but that is "was eating".
Do we used the word "meat" as for reclining or sat? NO! We don't currently use that word "meat" as for reclining or sat. To us, meat is food that we do eat such as chicken, beef, or pork.
It does matter what kind of translations that we are currently reading, and how do we understand each word correctly without being lost in understanding what does this mean. I still thought it is odd to use the word "meat", but in the good old day in the 1600's or 1700's, people would understand that word correctly, but now in the 21st century, it isn't what we think it means. It does make a big difference what kind of translations we should get or use to study on.
As for me, I am not KJV only, but I do used a lot of different translations such as ESV, NASB, NKJV and others. I do look into KJV when needed.
Let us not be KJV only, but let us be for Christ Alone.
